The Academy of the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan (ASCCA) held a commemorative event marking the 36th anniversary of the January 20 Tragedy.

The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

A video dedicated to the January 20 Tragedy was then screened.

Opening the event, Head of ASCCA, Major General of the Customs Service Gulu Novruzov, spoke about the tragic events that took place in Baku 36 years ago. He described the January 20 Tragedy as a source of honour and pride in Azerbaijan's struggle for independence and noted that its true political and legal assessment was made following the return to power of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. He also emphasized that the victory achieved in the 44-day Patriotic War under the leadership of the Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev demonstrated that the sacrifice of all the country's martyrs, including those of January 20, had not been in vain.

The speakers included Deputy Head of ASCCA Jamila Namazova, Islam Huseynov, Head of the Department for the Organization of Educational and Methodological Work, Elvin Alirzayev, Head of the Department of Customs Affairs and Management, and Osman Mushayev, Chairman of the Student Youth Organization at ASCCA. They described the January 20 Tragedy as a chronicle of courage and patriotism and emphasized that it will always be remembered as a vivid example of the awakening of the Azerbaijani people's national consciousness and their struggle for freedom.
